Lake Scugog Walleye Fishery Closed

December 2015

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) has decided that effective January 1st, 2016, no Walleye fishing on Lake Scugog will be allowed until further notice. Recreational anglers are furious and, as to be expected, are blaming First Nations for over fishing walleye in Lake Scugog.

But here are the facts:

Since the 1920s Walleye was stocked in Lake Scugog for the sole purpose of enhancing a recreational sport fishery and therefore the population was artifically sustained.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry closed the walleye fishery on Lake Scugog because they believed that recreational fishing was the primary stressor on walleye populations.
